HIALEAH, Fla. — City and county leaders in Miami-Dade are taking action to address illegal dumping along roadways in Hialeah that residents say has been overwhelmed with trash.
The Hialeah Police Department reported that people have been dumping tons of garbage along the roadway of Northeast 154th Avenue in the middle of the night.
At a press conference on Thursday, Commissioner Rene Gonzalez presented a $25,000 check to the city of Hialeah to help cover cleanup costs.
The county sheriff’s office and the city of Hialeah Gardens also announced a joint task force to aggressively pursue and hold polluters accountable.
“Serious penalties will be enforced on these suspects or these individuals that want to come to Hialeah to to to to dump to do illegal dumping in our city,” said Hialeah Mayor Jacqueline Garcia-Roves.
“Let me be clear, this behavior is not acceptable, and if you are one of the people doing it, stop immediately because we will catch you and you will face the consequences,” added Miami-Dade Sheriff Rosie Cordero-Stutz.
Authorities said the crackdown could include fines and prison time.
The problem, highlighted in Local 10 News’ “Don’t Trash Our Treasure” report last month, stretched for blocks along Northeast 107th Avenue.
“To be clear, cleaning up all this trash, that’s just the first step. Ramping up enforcement, getting the public involved, that’s the critical next step,” said Local 10’s Environmental Advocate Louis Aguirre.
The city of Hialeah is also partnering with Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers to offer a reward to residents who report illegal dumping that leads to arrests. Anyone with information is urged to call 305-471-8477.
