MIAMI — A Miami man was arrested Thursday, weeks after he allegedly shot another man in the chest at a gas station in northwest Miami-Dade, authorities said.
According to the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office, the shooting was reported at about 10:20 p.m. on Sept. 1 at the 7-Eleven, located at 4596 NW 22nd Avenue.
Deputies said they responded to the scene, along with Miami-Dade Fire Rescue, and found the victim, Haytham Mohammed, 40, suffering from a gunshot wound.
He was transported to Jackson Memorial Hospital by MDFR as deputies canvassed the area in search for the shooter.
According to an arrest report, detectives reviewed surveillance video and later interviewed the victim who said that he was at the gas station, asking customers for money so he could buy a lighter.
He said he then asked a man on a scooter or motorcycle for money and/or a lighter, but the man told him he had something for him and then proceeded to shoot him once in the chest.
According to the report, surveillance video shows that the gunman, later identified as Alexander Obregon, 27, had used an ATM at the business, attempting to make several transactions with several different bank cards.
Detectives were also able to get his license plate number, which helped to identify him, the report stated.
According to the report, Obregon was pulled over Tuesday and a gun was found inside the backpack he was wearing.
Deputies said the gun was analyzed and came back as a match for the gun used in the shooting.
Deputies said Obregon was also in possession of three credit cards when he was pulled over, two of which were used at the gas station on the night of the shooting.
According to the report, a judge later signed a residential search warrant for Obregon and detectives found the same clothing he was wearing on the night of the shooting inside his house.
Deputies said he invoked his right to remain silent and was arrested on charges of attempted first-degree murder, shooting a deadly missile and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
According to the report, Obregon was previously convicted of an unrelated burglary and grand theft in Miami-Dade County in August 2022. He was also convicted of a strongarm robbery in November 2017.
As of Friday afternoon, Obregon was being held at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center. Online jail records listed his bond as “to be set.”
