MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. — With fried gator on the grill and chants of “Let’s go Canes!” echoing through the parking lots, Miami Hurricanes fans turned up the heat on their longtime rivals — the Florida Gators — ahead of Saturday’s season opener at Hard Rock Stadium.
“You got Canes fans everywhere,” one fan said. “You kinda respectfully talk a little trash here and there.”
In a “house divided,” one group of die-hard Miami fans chose to make their pre-game statement literal — by frying up actual gator tail.
“Fried gator, baby. Let’s go. Frying ‘em all night,” another laughed. “We’re looking for that win. That sneaky win. We win either way — we either get a new coach or we destroy these guys.”
Down the tailgate line, other fans joined in the pre-game tradition with pork on the menu.
“We decided on pork because we’re gonna roast the Gators inside,” a longtime Hurricanes supporter said. “This is the best team I’ve seen in 20 years. Well coached in the trenches. I like tank warfare.”
From homemade signs to spirited chants and family cookouts, the energy was high and hopes even higher.
“Especially getting the girls involved and bringing them to the U game,” one father said. “Keeping the generation alive.”
And with that — flags waving and grills blazing — the message from Canes Nation was clear: it’s always all about the U.
