BROWARD COUNTY, Fla. — A man is dead after a shooting involving a Broward Sheriff’s Office deputy occurred Sunday evening in unincorporated Broward County, authorities confirmed.
According to BSO, the agency received a call around 5:35 p.m. about a man walking around the Franklin Park area, in the 2500 block of Northwest Ninth Court, waving a gun.
6 p.m. report:
Video obtained by Local 10 News shows the man running out of a home with the gun to his head.
His cousin, Shakira McFadden, said he was suffering from a medical episode and was on drugs.
“He is on the wall with a gun to his head. It was never pointed at you. Why, why was the first bullet through the head?” McFadden said.
BSO confirmed that deputies responded to the scene and made contact with the man, ordering him to put his hands up. At some point during the encounter, shots were fired by a deputy, a BSO spokeswoman said.
“BSO deputies quickly responded to the scene and made contact with this armed individual. At some point during contact, shots were fired and the subject was pronounced deceased on scene,” BSO spokeswoman Miranda Grossman said.
Video in which gunshots could be heard was captured live on social media.
No deputies were injured in the shooting, which McFadden said should never have happened.
“All my nieces and nephews don’t have a dad,” she said. “Why? Why excessive force? We gotta have another way to help the mental(ly ill) patients. Not everybody is bad. Some people just are mental. They have problems. Mental health is real.”
The circumstances surrounding the shooting remain under investigation.
