MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. — A peace walk honoring the late D’Sean Perry got underway Saturday at Sgt. Joseph Delancy Richmond Heights Park.
Perry, a Gulliver Prep graduate, played football at UVA until his life was cut short in a 2022 shooting that killed three players and injured two others.
Carla Williams, UVA’s athletic director, remembered Perry’s impact.
“So smart, so kind, great in the classroom, great on the football field,” she said.
His sister described him as someone who “shared positivity. He was very humorous. Funny. Silly.”
The peace walk, held just a week after Perry’s birthday, included the unveiling of a bench and tree at the park.
Williams said showing up for families helps with the healing process.
“It’s been a very difficult healing process because we lost three very bright stars,” she said.
Community members echoed the sentiment.
“I felt like we needed something positive in our community. And I feel that it brings togetherness, love,” one participant said.
Perry’s mother, Happy Perry, said the new tree and bench will provide a place of solitude for the family when they miss him most.
“I’m at peace. I’m at peace,” she said.
Dozens of attendees gathered for music, food, and t-shirts commemorating Perry, celebrating his life and the positive impact he had on those around him.
Those wishing to pay tribute can visit the new bench and tree at Sgt. Joseph Delancy Park in Richmond Heights.
