MDFR: E-bike causes large shed fire behind northwest Miami-Dade home

Fire breaks out in backyard shed, caused by e-bike

MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. — Firefighters in northwest Miami-Dade County attacked a backyard blaze Sunday morning as smoke billowed into the air.

It occurred behind a home located near the intersection of Northwest 91st Street and Third Avenue.

A wooden shed that was engulfed in flames was quickly extinguished a few moments later by Miami-Dade Fire Rescue crews.

It didn’t take an investigator much time to find the cause.

“it was caused by an e-bike, a lithium battery bike,” said MDFR Capt. Eddy Pacheco. “They’re charging the batteries while they’re home for them to use later on, and a lot of times they just short out and self-combust and start a fire.”

As fire crews and an investigator made their final assessment before pulling away from the scene, they made it clear that e-bike fires are becoming a problem.

“It’s happening more because of the large number of e-bikes and scooters we see around, so we’re starting to see more of those fires,” said Pacheco.

The incident is now a cautionary tale about what can happen if a charging e-bike is left unattended.

“Keep it outside the house,” said Pacheco. “Always charge it outside the house, not near a building or anything because if that happens you might just lose the bike not the whole house.”

Firefighters confirmed that there were no injures reported in the blaze.
