MIAMI — Demonstrators gathered Monday afternoon in protest of a proposed Donald J. Trump Presidential Library on land that was just handed over to the state by Miami Dade College.
FIU professor Dr. Marvin Dunn and several local groups organized the protest, calling the move to put Trump’s library beside the Freedom Tower a profound insult.
“No president, including Obama, should get this land, much less for free,” said Dunn. “A president who is rounding up people by the thousands, sending them to countries they’ve never been to, and then to have this building with his library next to it, after doing that to our community? I don’t see that.”
The vote that handed over the 2.5 acre employee parking lot to the state of Florida happened quickly.
The state notified MDC that it wanted the land on Sept. 16.
Board of Trustees Chair Roberto Alonso told Local 10’s Glenna Milberg on “This Week in South Florida” no reason or details behind the request were given.
“The Trump administration had been looking for several viable sites in South Florida,” he said. “MDC had always been rumored to be one of them but that was never told to us ahead of the vote.”
Exactly seven days later, the board voted to hand over the land without any apparent debate, questioning or public input.
The agenda only listed a vote to “convey” property to the state, but did not say which property. The meeting was not broadcast, live-streamed or even recorded, and no official minutes have been provided.
“There’s never been a master plan for this parking lot,” said Alonso.
