According to jail records, Tanweer Syed, is facing one count each of vehicular homicide and reckless driving causing damage to a person or property.

The crash happened just before 2 a.m. on Jan. 29 near the 1900 block of South University Drive.

Investigators said Syed was driving a 2024 Toyota Tundra pickup that collided with a 2023 Lexus RC350.

They said the female driver of the Lexus died from injuries sustained in the crash. Authorities have not released the victim’s age or identity.

Officers with the Davie Police Department said Syed was “shoeless, unkempt and smudged” when they spoke with him at the scene.

Police determined that the Tundra had been traveling northbound when it struck the Lexus as it attempted a left turn across the northbound lanes of South University Drive.

Authorities said Syed signed a written consent for police to search his vehicle.

Investigators later downloaded the truck’s electronic data recorder, which showed the vehicle was traveling between 78 and 84 mph in the seconds leading up to the crash. The posted speed limit in the area is 45 mph.

Body camera video from responding officers showed that the southbound traffic light was flashing yellow at the time of the crash, and police noted that roadway obstructions limited the view of the intersection.

Investigators concluded that Syed’s excessive speed and failure to heed the flashing signal were the primary causes of the crash. The final estimated speed of the Tundra at impact was about 72 mph.

“The combination of excessive speed and failure to heed a flashing yellow signal comprise willful and wanton disregard for the safety of others,” an officer wrote in Syed’s arrest report.

The report made no mention of alcohol being a factor in the crash.

As of Tuesday, Syed was being held at the Broward Main Jail on a $76,000 bond.
