MIAMI — More than 300 boys from several schools participated in a special ceremony on Wednesday night.
They’re determined to make their communities stronger with mentoring and service.
The Tie Tying Ceremony for the 5000 Role Models of Excellence took place in a busy Miami Senior High School cafeteria, where students were serving up success.
“We’re going to have fun, we’re going to learn about a lot of stuff,” said attendee Tremel Turner.
Like the ties being looped around their collars, the young men at the event were carrying confidence and elegance.
“They’re preparing for us to be young men in the future,” said Turner, who was among the newest inductees at the ceremony.
The crowd rose to their feet as the program welcomed the latest class.
“It’s about brotherhood,” said Jason Jeanty.
For decades, the program has paired mentors with students, kept boys in school, and inspired them to reach their goals.
During the event, mentors tied ties and gave young mentees words of encouragement as proud parents watched on.
“I’m sure this program will help him grow and become a mentor and role model, especially that the school is looking for him to be,” said Chavekka Edwards.
Students in attendance have made commitments to excellence, education and respect.
For Turner, the tie tying lesson is already practical.
“When I get older, I can marry a girl, and I’m going to have to wear a tie for the wedding,” he said.
The next Tie Tying Ceremony will be on Oct. 15.
