Driver airlifted after being struck by object on Florida's Turnpike in Miami Gardens

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. — Miami-Dade Fire Rescue confirmed that a woman was injured Wednesday morning while driving on the southbound lanes of Florida’s Turnpike near Northwest 199th Street, close to Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens.

According to Florida Highway Patrol, the incident occurred just after 11:05 a.m. when a piece of metal fell from a tow truck onto the roadway.

Troopers said an oncoming GMC SUV struck the debris, which went through the windshield and hit the front-seat passenger in the arm.

They said she suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was airlifted to a trauma center in northern Miami-Dade.

Sky 10 flew over the scene just before noon, capturing the woman being loaded from a gurney into the air rescue helicopter.

A black SUV with a cracked windshield was also visible as troopers investigated the area.

Authorities said the roadway has since reopened.

No other details about the incident were immediately released.
