PALM BAY, Fla. — A city councilman in Palm Bay is facing backlash after he was accused of attacking Indian-Americans on social media.
Now, several county leaders are speaking out, even calling for Councilman Chandler Langevin to step down.
“Silence can lead to violence and so I felt very convicted to speak up on this this time,” said Palm Bay Councilman Kenny Johnson.
Johnson is one of several Brevard County leaders who are speaking out after posts on Langevin’s X page displayed attacks against Indian Americans.
“My first preference would be for the councilman to step down on his own terms,” said Johnson. “If not, then the only way would be for a recall, which is not realistic, or for the governor to remove him himself.”
Johnson is now proposing that the city attorney write a letter to Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis to remove Langevin from his position.
He would need a majority to back his proposal.
This all stems from posts by Langevin late last month.
On Sept. 26, a post on his X page said “Deport every Indian immediately” in response to a Homeland Security post about a crash involving an immigrant here illegally.
Two days later, another post stated, “There’s not a single Indian that cares about the United States.”
Back in February, the councilman was under fire for a lengthy post saying Islam is neither peaceful nor strictly a religion, calling it a political ideology.
He also hosted a march to celebrate the life of Charlie Kirk, but put out a flyer that they would also be marching for all victims of “left-wing evil.”
“When you come at the Muslim community or the Indian community or say left-wing evil, these are people who conduct business in the city of Palm Bay,” said Johnson.
The posts, which are still online as of this story’s publication, prompted Palm Bay Mayor Rob Medina to send a letter to residents.
“Recently, some public remarks toward Americans of Indian descent have caused pain and division,” it read, in part. “While each person is entitled to their own views, we must be clear: words that demean or devalue others have no place in Palm Bay.”
