HIALEAH, Fla. — Hialeah police arrested a 54-year-old man on Wednesday on accusations that he committed a bizarre bird burglary.

Investigators said Lazaro Diaz was seen in surveillance footage climbing on top of the roof of a home in the 600 block of West 15th Street, removing “numerous pigeons” and putting them in a bag just before 3 a.m. on Sept. 22.

“Numerous other pigeons were also taken from outside of camera view, which were kept inside of a separate cage,” an arrest report states.

The report doesn’t state what he was allegedly doing with the pigeons or what happened to them.

Authorities said officers were familiar with Diaz, who is homeless, and saw him loitering near East Eighth Avenue and 26th Street just before 2 a.m., and took him into custody on charges of burglary of an occupied dwelling and second-degree grand theft.

A judge set his bond at $8,000 on Wednesday and he remained held at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center.
