HIALEAH, Fla. — A 70-year-old Hialeah man was booked into jail this week, weeks after he allegedly stabbed his wife inside their car, Local 10 News learned Friday.
Online jail records show Jorge Diaz was booked into the Miami-Dade County Pre-Trial Detention Center Tuesday on charges of attempted murder and aggravated battery with a deadly weapon.
Diaz is accused of stabbing his wife while they were in a moving car on Sept. 2 in the area of West 12th Avenue and 53rd Terrace in Hialeah, causing a crash.
Police said he then stabbed himself, as well.
“A guy came out of the car and said, ‘He is killing her! He is killing her!’” witness Miguel Martinez said.
According to the Hialeah Police Department, fire rescue personnel took Diaz and the victim to Jackson Memorial Hospital’s Ryder Trauma Center.
The arrest report states that the married couple have two children in common.
According to the report, the victim told detectives that Diaz has never been violent before nor has he ever made any verbal threats or suicidal statements up until that day.
She said aside from taking medication for general health, he is not known to take any psychiatric medications, the report stated.
According to the report, the victim said that within four to five days prior to the stabbing, her husband had become paranoid, believing people were trying to cause him harm.
Police said she described his paranoid behavior as “obsession.”
According to the arrest report, the couple had been running errands that day and visited their children’s homes.
The victim said she was driving their car when her husband randomly started stabbing her with a pocket knife.
She said her husband repeatedly yelled, “I’m going to kill you because you hurt me!”
According to the report, the victim tried to grab Diaz’s hands to prevent him from continuing to stab her, but he grabbed her by the hair, pulled her closer to him and continued stabbing her until the crash occurred and witnesses intervened to stop him.
Police said the victim suffered cuts to the head, neck and hands.
According to the report, the pocket knife was impaled in Diaz’s chest when first responders arrived.
Police said Diaz asked officers to kill him as he placed the knife near his lower abdomen in an attempt to stab himself again.
Officers then used “necessary force” to stop Diaz from additional self-harm, the report stated.
According to the report, Diaz underwent surgery after the stabbing.
As of Friday, Diaz was being held on a $7,500 bond.
