BROWARD COUNTY, Fla. — Abandoned Pet Rescue has faced new challenges in recent months, but a partnership with ARC Broward is helping the nonprofit continue its mission of caring for abandoned animals while providing career opportunities for students with disabilities.
When it comes to cats, Kobe Wilson is an expert.
As a former student of Abandoned Pet Rescue, he is familiar with all the tasks required to care for the pets. But his journey to fill a position came with a special program through the ARC Broward animal care program.
“The moment I saw the animal care program I knew that’s the one,” Wilson said.
ARC Broward provides opportunities for people with disabilities, and its animal care certificate program empowers students to reach their full potential.
“My right hand, for example, it won’t stand up well and I have these,” Wilson said. “I don’t let it stop me from helping around here.”
“It shows that even if I have a disability, it doesn’t mean I can’t help out,” he added.
Wilson has become popular around the shelter, helping with everything from feeding the animals to clipping dog collars.
“She loves hugs,” he said, referring to one of the shelter dogs.
Kara Starzyk, manager of Abandoned Pet Rescue, said Wilson joined the team at a time when struggles soared to new heights.
“The economy, the housing market, even immigration is really impacting families in our community and we’re seeing more and more animals that are abandoned on our streets or left on our doorsteps or coming in as owner surrenders,” Starzyk said.
The shelter has been overwhelmed with surrenders.
“She is our 19th French bulldog that has come into our shelter since January 2024,” Starzyk said.
The partnership with ARC Broward not only helps meet the growing demand for animal care but also teaches students skills needed to succeed in the veterinary industry.
“When they leave this job, they’re able to find jobs at a veterinary clinic, at a pet store, at a grooming facility. There’s a wide range of opportunities that they can apply for,” Starzyk added.
For Wilson, the program has been an important first step in his journey to success.
“Don’t give up, and if anyone tells you that you can’t do it, then that is not true,” he said. “Don’t let anyone say that your disability won’t be able to stop you from achieving your goal.”
ARC Broward offers several programs, including culinary arts and healthcare certificates, with the healthcare program rolling out this month.
