MIAMI — Miami police said Monday that the cause of death for a man found dead outside a Liberty City home Sunday morning remains undetermined, though preliminary findings indicate his injuries from the dogs may have occurred after his death.
They said the man, believed to be in his 30s or 40s, was discovered around 1 a.m. near Northwest 67th Street and Eighth Avenue after reports that he was being attacked by dogs while at his sister’s house. When officers arrived, they found him dead at the scene.
In a statement to Local 10 News, Miami police said the death “is unclassified pending further investigation.”
“Preliminary findings suggest that the deceased male may have suffered injuries caused by a dog after death, however we are awaiting the official findings from the Medical Examiner to determine the cause and manner of death,” the statement read. “No further details are available at this stage.”
The victim’s sister, who asked not to be identified on camera, said she does not believe her dogs killed her brother.
“It just saddens me that we think we have time but we don’t have time. Tomorrow is not promised,” said Chayil, the victim’s sister.
She said her family is grieving and has asked for privacy.
Authorities said 11 dogs were confiscated from the property by Miami-Dade Animal Services. Officials have not yet confirmed whether the animals were involved in the man’s death.
Neighbor Kevin John said the dogs were known to roam the area.
“They always got out (of) the gate. Always got out. Running around and s---,” John said. “I really think it’s a bad situation. I don’t know what happened. But I think it’s really bad.”
As the investigation continues, police are waiting for the medical examiner’s report to determine the exact cause and manner of death.
Authorities have not released the identity of the victim at this time and Chayil has not said if she wants to keep those dogs involved in the incident.
