MIAMI — A 15-year-old girl has been arrested in connection with a violent attack at Miami Northwestern Senior High School that left another student hospitalized, according to the Miami-Dade Schools Police Department.
Jail records show the teen is facing one count of third-degree felony battery.
The incident occurred Monday morning inside a school bathroom, where officers said a security guard was escorting the 15-year-old to the main office when another officer responded to the clinic and found the victim bleeding from an open wound on her forehead.
The school is located in Miami’s Liberty City neighborhood.
According to the arrest report, the 15-year-old told officers that the victim had struck her friend, prompting her friend to hit back with a Stanley cup. Police said the teen admitted she then joined the fight by striking the victim twice with a trumpet.
The report stated the teen also said she grabbed the victim’s hair, punched her several times, and kicked her after she fell to the ground.
Authorities said the victim, identified by her mother as 17-year-old Arianda Sharpton, was transported to Jackson Pediatrics Center for treatment of a large cut on her forehead. They said the suspect was subsequently taken to the Juvenile Assessment Center.
Sharpton’s mother, Nicole Luster, told Local 10 News on Monday that her daughter was attacked around 8 a.m. and required stitches. Luster said she was especially concerned because her daughter suffers from epilepsy.
“She said someone hit her in the head with a Stanley cup,” Luster said. “Then someone took a tuba, which is an instrument, and hit her in the head again. And she said when she knew anything, it was eight of them on top of her. Eight. It was eight girls who jumped her.”
Police later clarified that only three girls were involved — the victim and two others.
Sharpton told Local 10 News she was trying to stand up to a girl who was teasing her when the fight began.
“And then she hit me with a Stanley cup in my head and then I got hit with a trumpet,” Sharpton said. “Anything could have happened to me at that time, at that moment.”
A Miami-Dade County Public Schools spokesperson said the district is aware of the altercation and that the students involved are being disciplined in accordance with the Code of Student Conduct.
Luster said her daughter is now recovering at home but will not be returning to the school.
