MIAMI BEACH, Fla. — The “Queen of Latin Pop” and a true South Florida icon is getting a South Beach street named after her.
On Monday, Miami Beach will officially name 13th Street, off Ocean Drive, after Gloria Estefan.
Many of Estefan’s longtime fans say the Latin music mogul richly deserves the honor.
“I think it’s awesome to celebrate women, especially women of color who make a big difference in the community,” said Melanie Maslany, visiting from Philadelphia.
“Of course (she deserves it),” said Wasem Marie, visiting from Toronto. “Because Gloria Estefan is a pinnacle of music, and from what I understand, she has roots here.”
And she does. At the corner of Ocean Drive and 13th Street sits the Cardozo Hotel — which Estefan co-owns and helps operate.
The street renaming recommendation came from the Miami Beach Commission for Women.
The ceremony will take place on Monday at 11 a.m., followed by a celebratory brunch.
