MIAMI BEACH, Fla. — Shocking new video shows a wild crash on Miami Beach, where a Tesla came barreling down the street and slammed into a palm tree just feet away from a North Beach restaurant.
Police say the three men who fled the scene were tourists visiting from New York and that the Tesla they crashed was a rental.
Fortunately, no one was sitting on the patio when it happened, or this could have ended much differently.
Newly released security footage shows the moment the white Tesla lost control and slammed into a tree around 8:30 a.m. Sunday on Collins Avenue, right in front of Norman’s Tavern near 67th Street.
The impact knocked over the palm tree and sent debris flying into the restaurant’s outdoor seating area.
The bar’s owner, Matteo Chialastri, said had this happened at any other time of day, there likely would’ve been several people standing right there.
“Luckily it was closed because it could’ve been worse,” he said. “Thank god nobody was hurt and the restaurant was closed and nobody was walking on the sidewalk.”
A short time later, cellphone video captured three men with several bags trying to climb over a nearby fence to escape.
One by one, they’re seen tossing their bags over before scaling the fence themselves.
Police say only one of the men managed to get away. The other two were detained.
Officers are still searching for the third suspect as of Monday.
Investigators say no weapons were involved and it’s still unclear what charges the men could face.
