Officers with the Miami Gardens Police Department said they were dispatched around 10 a.m. to a home along the 3000 block of Northwest 204th Terrace after reports of a violent disturbance and possible gunfire.

Upon arrival, police said they found Ezekiel Manthon Leatherwood lying in front of the residence with a gunshot wound.

Miami-Dade Fire Rescue said medics airlifted Leatherwood to HCA Florida Aventura Hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening.

Investigators said the shooting stemmed from a home invasion robbery in which Leatherwood and three other armed suspects confronted a woman outside the home and forced her inside at gunpoint.

Once inside, police said the suspects kicked open a bedroom door, where the woman’s boyfriend armed himself in self-defense.

As the door was breached, the victim saw one of the suspects carrying an AR-15-style rifle and opened fire, striking Leatherwood, according to the report.

The remaining suspects fled the scene, while the victim detained Leatherwood until police arrived, the report stated.

Police said they recovered multiple shell casings, along with the victim’s gun and one of the suspect’s rifles.

After being treated and medically cleared, they said Leatherwood was taken into custody.

Jail records show he is facing one count each of attempted felony murder with a firearm and four counts of armed home invasion robbery.

Police said the investigation remains active as they work to identify the other suspects who they said fled the scene.

They also confirmed that Leatherwood made a confession, which was redacted in the publicly-released report.

As of Tuesday, he was being held at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center, where his bond was listed as “to be set.”

Anyone with information on the case is urged to call Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers at 305-471-8477.
