It happened around 10:15 p.m. Monday near Northwest 12th Avenue.

According to an arrest report, the victim told investigators she was asleep on a bus bench when she was awakened by a man striking her multiple times in the face.

Police said the attacker, who they identified as Tyler Anthony Carter, of Miami Gardens, then grabbed the woman by the neck and began choking her until she lost consciousness.

When the woman regained consciousness, she told detectives that Carter dragged her from the bus bench to a nearby grassy area, where he continued hitting her, according to the report.

The woman said he grabbed her neck again, tried to break it, and choked her until she lost consciousness a second time, the report stated.

Police said the victim was eventually able to free herself and run for help.

They said a be-on-the-lookout alert was issued for Carter who was seen fleeing north on Northwest 12th Avenue.

After being detained, detectives said Carter voluntarily agreed to go to the police station, where he was read his Miranda rights and agreed to speak without an attorney.

Police said he made a confession but denied striking the woman in the publicly-released report.

They also said the victim was unable to identify her attacker in a photo lineup, telling police she could not see his face clearly during the assault.

Carter was arrested and booked into the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center. Jail records show he faces one count each of kidnapping and battery by strangulation and was being held without bond as of Tuesday afternoon.
