FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — The sights and sounds of air travel are familiar in airports across the country.
Now, in some airports, travelers are hearing something new.
It’s a new video by Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem in which she blames Democrats for the ongoing government shutdown.
“And because of this, many of our operations are impacted,” she states in the video.
There are several airports in U.S. cities that are refusing to show the video.
In Denver, officials say it’s because monitors don’t play audio.
Airport brass in Colorado Springs say it’s because the video is partisan, which goes against policy.
Miami International Airport confirmed it is not showing the video, to be consistent with county policy.
It was also not seen on the screens at Fort Lauderdale Hollywood International Airport.
While travelers in South Florida said they’re not experiencing major delays related to the shutdown, there are some airports across the country that are, thanks to a shortage of air traffic controllers.
And Noem is right that most TSA employees are working without pay.
Airports routinely show videos from the Homeland Security boss, but usually the messages are about safety or procedures, not what’s happening on Capitol Hill.
STATEMENT FROM MIA
“At Miami International Airport, we deeply value and support our TSA partners and the vital role they play in ensuring the safety of our passengers every day. To be consistent with Miami-Dade County policy regarding messaging within the MIA terminal, MIA will continue playing TSA’s existing Real ID awareness video, which provides passengers with important, time-sensitive information directly related to their travel experience and federal requirements. We remain fully supportive of TSA’s mission and continue to collaborate closely with them in serving our shared customers.”
STATEMENT FROM FLL
“The TSA video in question is not playing at the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL) as our advertising policy does not permit political messaging to be displayed in our facility.”
