R&B soul singer and Grammy-winner D’Angelo, known for hits like Brown Sugar and How Does it Feel, has died after privately battling pancreatic cancer, his family confirmed in a statement to Variety on Tuesday.
D’Angelo, whose real name is Michael Archer, died at the age of 51. He is from Richmond, Virginia.
“The shining star of our family has dimmed his light for us in this life … After a prolonged and courageous battle with cancer, we are heartbroken to announce that Michael D’Angelo Archer, known to his fans around the world as D’Angelo, has been called home, departing this life today, October 14th, 2025,“ the statement read in part.
DJ Premier, who worked with D’Angelo on the 1998 song Devil’s Pie, shared the news on X Tuesday.
“Such a sad loss to the passing of D’Angelo. We have so many great times. Gonna miss you so much. Sleep peacefully D’ Love You KING,” he wrote.
D’Angelo’s career earned him critical acclaim for blending soul, R&B and funk, and his music influenced many artists over the years.
Details about funeral arrangements or public memorials have not yet been released.
