HIALEAH, Fla. — Hialeah police arrested a woman accused of neglecting her 77-year-old mother.

Authorities said they took Janet Edwards, 49, into custody on Tuesday at her home along the 1600 block of West 62nd Street.

According to police, the senior’s granddaughter ― Edwards’ daughter ― and another witness came to police with photos of the victim, who lives with Edwards, inside the Hialeah home.

The photos showed the senior “with feces in her hands and consuming it,” according to an arrest form.

Police said they were also shown text messages between Edwards and her daughter in which Edwards acknowledged knowing what the victim had done and showing no urgency to help, stating, “she smelled s--- and was going back to bed,” per the arrest form.

The form also stated that Edwards’ daughter saw her mother slap the victim in the face on a different occasion after growing frustrated with her.

When police went to the home to check on the victim, they said they found her inside a room with no electricity that had been locked from the outside, lying on an air mattress. She was later taken to Palmetto General Hospital for medical observation.

Officers then took Edwards to the police station for questioning. Police said she admitted to seeing her mother eating her own feces five times and admitted to sending the text messages “because she was upset or frustrated.”

Authorities said she denied hitting her mother.

Edwards was later arrested and taken to the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center where she remains as of Wednesday morning with bond listed as “to be set” on charges of neglect of an elderly or disabled adult and battery on a person 65 or older.
