HOLLYWOOD, Fla. — An investigation remains ongoing after a fire broke out on the top floor of a beachfront high-rise.
It happened on Tuesday afternoon inside a corner unit on the 12th floor of the Edgewater Beach Towers located at 400 N. Surf Road in Hollywood.
Residents quickly evacuated after the fire sparked and first responders began arriving to battle the blaze.
“There is a lot of elderly people so that was the main concern getting all the elderly out,” said witness Robert Lopez.
Firefighters from Hollywood, Davie and the Broward Sheriff’s Office worked to quickly extinguish the flames.
Now a day later, extensive damage can be seen inside the unit.
“The stucco and the glass, it was just popping and flying off, it was crazy,” said Lopez. “The guy that was the owner noticed it and he ran up…then you could feel the heat.”
That man could later be seen speaking to investigators.
An elderly woman, a police officer and a firefighter were taken to the hospital due to smoke inhalation, but no other injuries were reported.
A friend of the owner told Local 10 News he believed the blaze started as an electrical fire in the kitchen.
The state fire marshal continues to investigate the cause of the blaze.
