MIAMI — A man has died after he got pinned under his own van Wednesday in Miami, police confirmed to Local 10 News.
According to police, the accident occurred just before 9 a.m. in the area of Southwest Seventh Avenue and Eighth Street in the city’s Little Havana neighborhood.
Police said officers arrived at the scene and found the 46-year-old victim pinned by the van.
“His gear shift was not operating correctly,” a spokesperson for the police department told Local 10 in an email. “(The) victim would go under to manually shift it into drive/reverse. In this case, he probably forgot to engage the emergency brake before going under to manually shift it. Once underneath the van he shifted it into drive, and the vehicle began to move running him over with the front tire and pinning him with the rear tires.”
The victim, whose identified has not been released, was pronounced dead at the scene by Miami Fire Rescue.
Police confirmed that he was not associated with any businesses in the area.
Sky 10 flew over the scene after the accident as investigators were focusing their attention on the victim’s white van. A tarp could be seen peeking out from underneath the van.
Police eventually called in a tow truck to lift the van, and several officers were seen pulling the body out from underneath it.
The body was later put into a body bag and was taken away by the medical examiner. Police also removed a small dog from the van, which was taken away by Animal Services.
