New bus rapid transit system to move riders from Florida City to Dadeland

Miami-Dade launches new bus rapid transit system

MIAMI — Miami-Dade County is launching a new public transportation program.

On Wednesday, the county held a ribbon-cutting ceremony for its new Metro Express bus rapid transit system.

The electric bus service is expected to start on Monday.

The new service hopes to get bus riders from Florida City to the Dadeland South station faster.

Why will it be faster? There will be fewer stops along the route, and during peak hours, railroad-like crossing arms will assist the buses to move through busy intersections.

Rep. Carlos Gimenez, the former mayor of Miami-Dade County, addressed an issue for voters who approved a half-penny transportation surtax and had wanted the dedicated funds to be used to extend Metrorail south from Dadeland Mall instead of expanding bus services.

“You either got this, or you got nothing,” said Gimenez. “You were never going to get rail, because you don’t have the ridership and the federal government was never going to fund us for rail here. It’s a $2-$3 billion process, versus $300 million. Plus, if you were going to have a regular start, it wouldn’t even have started by now because that takes years and years of engineering.”
