FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — A 19-year-old Sunny Isles Beach woman was driving a Lexus at 124 mph one second before crashing into a minivan and killing its passenger on Interstate 595 in Davie in 2024, prosecutors said.
Now 20, Sofia Todorov appeared in Broward County court on Wednesday to face charges of vehicular homicide and reckless driving.
According to court documents, the crash happened just before 6 a.m. on May 19, 2024, just east of Southwest 136th Avenue.
Authorities allege Todorov was driving recklessly when she rear-ended the minivan and killed the victim, identified in a civil lawsuit as Lorene Seeler Young. The 65-year-old was an attorney with her own firm in Cooper City.
Young’s two children are now suing Todorov and her mother, who allegedly allowed Todorov to drive the vehicle. So too is the surviving driver of the Chrysler Pacifica van, who claims she suffered “permanent and continuing” injuries from the high-speed crash.
Prosecutors said data from the vehicle’s “black box” showed that Todorov hit triple-digit speeds before the wreck.
Todorov’s attorney, in criminal court on Wednesday, alleges that Todorov was cut off and did hit the brakes.
She was given a $65,000 bond and ordered to wear an ankle monitor if she posts bond.
