FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — Just weeks into her role as Cap-Haïtien’s new mayor, Angie Bell is pushing for change and sustainable development in the northern Haitian city she calls home.
“We have to change the narratives and bring more sustainable development back to Haiti,” Bell said at the Florida International Trade and Cultural Expo, where she met with business and civic leaders to explore new partnerships.
Cap-Haïtien has been a sister city to Fort Lauderdale for more than two decades. Bell said she wants to strengthen those ties and attract investment to tackle growing challenges, including worsening waste management and an influx of residents seeking safety.
“That’s one of our priorities — to collaborate with people and investors to strengthen the organizations already there,” she said.
FITCE country chair Djenane Gourgue praised Bell as “a member of the diaspora who chose to return home and take initiative in Haiti.”
Appointed to her post amid Haiti’s ongoing political crisis, Bell said she hopes to inspire younger leaders.
