On Thursday, authorities announced that an elderly woman who had been hospitalized due to the fire has sadly passed away.

Officials did not provide any additional information, but initially authorities said that the woman, along with a police officer and a firefighter, were taken to Aventura Hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation.

The fire ignited Tuesday afternoon on the 12th floor, the top floor, of the Edgewater Beach Towers located at 400 N. Surf Road in Hollywood.

Residents evacuated the building and watched from below as firefighters arrived to quickly battle the blaze and extinguish the flames.

The owner of the unit was seen at one point speaking to investigators.

Residents told Local 10 News’ Magdala Louissaint the woman lived in the unit below the one that caught fire with her 80-year-old husband.

Neighbors said the woman was bedridden and cared for by her husband, and that she had to be carried out of the building as the fire burned.

As for the cause of the fire, that remains under investigation by the state fire marshal.

The police officer who was treated for smoke inhalation was treated, released and at last check was doing well, according to Hollywood PD.

There has been no update on the condition of the firefighter who was treated at the hospital.
