The Broward Sheriff’s Office confirmed Friday that Sholom D. Marcus, 23, is now charged with leaving the scene of a crash involving death after the victim, Joseph Henriquez, 40, died from his injuries.

According to deputies, Henriquez was riding his bicycle just before 12:30 a.m. on Oct. 12 when he was struck from the rear by a 2022 Chevy Trailblazer that was heading west on North Palm Aire Drive.

“Henriquez was propelled off the bicycle into the eastbound lanes of traffic,” BSO spokesman Carey Codd wrote in a news release. “He was transported to Broward Health North for treatment. Sadly, on Oct. 13, Henriquez succumbed to the injuries he sustained in the crash.”

According to BSO, Marcus continued driving westbound after the crash, returned to the scene and then fled the area.

Deputies said they located the vehicle on Oaks Clubhouse Drive and Marcus admitted to being the driver involved in the crash.

He was initially charged with failing to stop or remain at an accident involving serious bodily injury, but that charge has since been upgraded to leaving the scene of an accident involving a death.
