It happened back in September in the Florida Keys.

According to authorities, 8-year-old Richard Burrows was bit by a shark in Key Largo while he was with his father and sister.

Sheriff’s deputies say a black tip shark charged them, biting Richard on the knee and arm.

Authorities said the family was spearfishing and snorkeling near Horseshoe Reef when the attack occurred.

A dive boat operator who was nearby helped bring the family back to the Garden Cove Marina in Key Largo, where first responders started treating the boy.

He was taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital for further treatment.

First responders said the real hero was Burrows’ sister, 10-year-old Rose, who helped hold her brother’s leg to control the bleeding.

It was later determined the family was in an area where spearfishing was not permitted.

Burrows has been recovering from his injuries and has since reunited with the surgeons who helped save his life. He underwent multiple surgeries, one of which lasted more than three hours.
