DEERFIELD BEACH, Fla. — As heavy rain came pouring down in Deerfield Beach Sunday night, Thomas Noland knew it was only a matter of time before his home would get flooded.
It’s not the first time, he said.
“Waiting game,” said Noland. “Within about 30 minutes, we had water in the house. We had about six inches of water throughout my entire house.”
Water quickly overtook his street, Southeast Eighth Avenue, flooding homes up and down the block.
Noland said he was grateful he got his children, ages 4 and 6, out of the home in time.
“There’s a lot of heartache because you build everything, you know?” he said.
Now Noland and his neighbors are sweeping up the mess and throwing out all the debris left behind.
Furniture, mattresses, personal items and other now-ruined objects are stacked up in bunches across the neighborhood.
Noland and his family are staying at an AirBnb this week while they figure out what they will do.
“At this point, we’re just going day-to-day, trying to figure out what’s next, how we’re going to recover from this,” he said. “Hopefully the city and everybody looks at how we can prevent this again.”
