MIAMI BEACH, Fla. — The body of 33-year-old Miami Beach Police Motorman David Cajuso was taken Wednesday from the Miami-Dade Medical Examiner’s Office to his final resting place at Vista Memorial Gardens as loved ones continued to mourn.
It has been an emotional two days for the South Florida law enforcement community.
Police said Cajuso was traveling on northbound I-75 near the Palmetto Expressway Tuesday morning when his motorcycle went down a steep embankment after he somehow lost control of it.
Law enforcement officers from across the region gathered at Jackson Memorial Hospital’s Ryder Trauma Center, but the father of three children - ages two, three, and five - did not survive.
A procession was also held Tuesday, with emotional officers and family members paying tribute.
Flowers now lay outside the Miami Beach Police Department, and flags flew at half-staff in his memory. Miami Beach Police Department Chief Wayne Jones called Cajuso a “dedicated hero.”
“This is a sad and dark day for men and women of MBPD and for our LEOs in South Florida. I ask that you keep his young family in your thoughts and prayers as they navigate this grievance process,” Jones said.
That process continued Wednesday as officers saluted, sirens blared, and family and friends arrived at the funeral home. The body of Cajuso was received with embraces among officers, family, and friends.
Cajuso’s wife took her time to say goodbye while entering the back of the rescue truck.
The farewell marked a final tribute to an honorable man who dedicated his life to public service.
A Help a Hero fund has been created for Cajuso to help his family with finances. Click here for more information on how to contribute.
