MIAMI — After days of delays and cancellations, flights to the hard-hit island of Jamaica are slowly starting to resume from South Florida following the devastation caused by Hurricane Melissa.
The Category 5 storm caused severe damage to airports in Kingston and Montego Bay, forcing them to close and cancel dozens of flights between the island and Miami International Airport.
Noon report:
But starting Thursday, American Airlines resumed limited operations following the reopening of Kingston’s airport that morning.
While full commercial flight service has yet to resume, the airline says two charter flights bound for Kingston took off from MIA earlier in the day.
The first carried only American Airlines crew and relief supplies, while the second flight carried customers and some additional relief.
After landing, both flights are scheduled to return to Miami with passengers who are looking to leave the island.
