MIAMI — As Jamaica’s airports have been reopening following Hurricane Melissa, those with Jamaican ties are making their way back to Miami.
Some told stories about the destruction the Category 5 storm left in its wake.
“There’s a lot of people on the street,” one woman told Local 10 News after arriving at Miami International Airport. “They’re hungry, they have nowhere to sleep. It’s just total devastation. It’s unlike anything I have ever seen before.”
She said photographs making their way off the island only tell part of the story.
“Seeing it in person, it’s completely different,” she said. “It’s complete devastation. Where I am from, in St. Elizabeth, we took some of the hardest hits. I’m talking about leveled. The communities are totally leveled.”
Another traveler said she was visiting her mom, who lost everything she owned to the storm.
“You have lots of families on the roadside,” she said. “They don’t have anywhere to live. No food. They lost their clothes and everything is gone.”
