The Caring Place provides hope for many who have nowhere else to turn

The Caring Place provides for so many who desperately need help

MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. — As the government shutdown continues and SNAP benefits will be delayed for millions of Americans, Local 10 is rallying support for our hunger relief organizations.

Every year, Local 10’s Day of Giving collects thousands of pounds of food for seven local nonprofits.

Today we introduce you to The Caring Place.

High above The Caring Place in Wynwood you can see a massive and colorful mural taking shape.

It depicts the transformation that happens inside the walls of the building and it’s the vision of renowned artist and Miami native Brian Peterson.

“Anybody, no matter what you want to do, no matter what your goals are, you should have people around you, contending for you to follow your dreams,” he said.

Not too long ago, 41-year-old Scott Jones Jr. was devoid of hope and dreams.

“I was dealing with substance use disorder,” he said. “I was absolutely lost. I was completely broken.”

But like the man depicted in Peterson’s mural, the power of prayer and the compassion of newfound friends unlocked infinite possibilities.

“I was given a bed, I was given clothes, I was given a whole new perspective on who I was and how I could share that with others,” said Jones. “Change is possible. It was possible for me.”

It was also possible for Antonio Villasuso.

“My favorite part of the job is the restoration,” he said.

Before he became president of The Caring Place, Villasuso faced his own struggles with drug addiction.

“I always encourage them, don’t give up, because I myself had to go through seven rehabs to be able to get to where I am today,” he said.

The Caring Place opened its doors more than a century ago, and what was true then remains true today.

The faith-based nonprofit, with campuses in Miami-Dade and Broward counties, is serving hope in abundance and feeding more than 500 people three times a day.

As the need grows, the generosity must exceed it.

The Local 10 Day of Giving is one way you can make a difference, answering the prayers of those hungry for a new beginning.

When donating to The Caring Place, 100% of funds collected online go directly to the nonprofit. You can also visit them in-person this Friday, Nov. 7 at two Publix locations in Miami Shores, located at 9050 Biscayne Boulevard, and Pembroke Pines, located at 15729 Pines Boulevard.
