MIAMI — A 72-year-old man had to go to the bathroom so badly that he committed a violent felony to gain access to a stall, according to Miami police.

Authorities said the crime happened on Monday at the Publix at 601 NW Second Ave. in the city’s Overtown neighborhood.

An arrest report states that the victim was using the men’s room stall just after 9 a.m. when Alfredo Brindis “entered the restroom frantically and began to bang on the stall door, demanding (he) come out.”

The report states the victim, leaving the stall, came face-to-face with Brindis, “who was yelling at him to hurry and move.”

“The victim stated he could not exit the stall because (Brindis) was blocking his way and he said to (him) to get out (of) the way,” it states. “After that, (Brindis) presented a knife and waved it in front of the victim, telling him to move. The victim stated (Brindis) tried to cut him with the knife and he used his large bookbag to defend himself.”

The victim then went to a Miami police officer working a security detail at the store, police said. According to the report, the officer entered the bathroom and saw Brindis “with a knife in his hand” and ordered him to drop it.

Brindis, according to police, told the officer “that he really needed to use the restroom and that the victim did not move out of his way, so he took out a knife.”

Police arrested Brindis, who is homeless, on a charge of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

As of Tuesday, he was being held in the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center on a $5,000 bond.
