DAVIE, Fla. — The Local 10 Day of Giving was created to help hunger relief organizations serve our neighbors in need.
For 33 years, Harvest Drive has been doing just that, responding to the critical needs of Broward County students and their families.
“We work with our different social workers in our schools that make referrals, and we work with different agencies in Broward County,” said Harvest Drive founder Renee Herman.
At its boutique location in Davie, dozens of referrals come in daily.
An all-female volunteer force known as the Worker Bees meticulously sort, pack and prepare all the goods for pick up.
“They can leave here with a bag of toiletries, they can leave here with a bag of food and everything they need to make their home pretty, safe, and they’re happy,” said Herman.
What began in 1992 as a small-scale, holiday campaign has evolved into a colossal, year-round charity.
“We are assisting over 25,000 people in Broward County annually,” Herman said. “Our November drive assists about 12,000 people.”
From day one, Harvest Drive founder Renee Herman built the organization to be sustainable. The key, she says, is to instill kindness in the next generation.
“We taught them to do the right thing, to share kindness,” she said. “And they’re coming back with their kids.”
Alex Falcon is a case in point.
“I was ten when I started,” he said.
Now, 29 years later, Falcon is still volunteering and passing on valuable lessons in giving to his two children.
“I want to give food away to people who need stuff for Thanksgiving so they can have a happy dinner,” said Addison Falcon, a young philanthropist-in-training.
You too can do your part to help with our Local 10 Day of Giving.
One act of kindness on Friday, Nov. 7 can produce a bountiful harvest and make a difference for our neighbors in need.
“The Day of Giving is extraordinary,” said Herman. “It makes a huge impact on our collections.”
Local 10’s Amanda Pappas and Peta Sherwood will join Harvest Drive during the Local 10 Day of Giving at the Publix supermarket located at 1003 East Commercial Boulevard in Oakland Park from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
