MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. — A staff member at a west Miami-Dade medical clinic stole tens of thousands of dollars of a Botox-like medication, along with prescription facial fillers, to run a lucrative ― but illegal ― side gig, sheriff’s deputies said.
A Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office arrest report states that a record of Zelle deposits showed that Eliany Collazo-Llosa, 28, of southwest Miami-Dade, made at least $90,000 from the scheme.
According to MDSO, Collazo-Llosa worked at International Dermatology Research, Inc., a skin care clinic located at 8370 W. Flagler St. in the unincorporated Fontainebleau area, as a facialist and was not licensed to perform injections.
However, deputies said she stole more than 66 files of Xeomin, a Botox-like drug, and Juvederm, a facial filler, to perform her own injections on the side. Investigators said she offered clients a discount if they met at their homes instead of the clinic.
The MDSO report states that the clinic’s owner, after being informed of the thefts on May 14, inspected Collazo-Llosa’s office and “found used (syringes) of Juvederm and Xeomin.“
“The serial numbers of the bottles found matched the batch of serial numbers documented in the clinic’s inventory record,” it states. “Additionally, (the owner) found (two) boxes of Xeomin, one full and one-half empty, in (Collazo-Llosa’s) workspace.”
About $32,000 worth of the drugs were missing, authorities said.
CCTV footage also showed “multiple patients” treated by Collazo-Llosa “leaving the clinic without making payments for services rendered,” the report states.
Investigators said Collazo-Llosa took advantage of the “advancing age” of the clinic owner, who had “begun to rely on” Collazo-Llosa for some of its daily operations.
Members of the MDSO Medical Crimes Squad arrested Collazo-Llosa at her home in the West Perrine area on Wednesday and investigators said she “admitted to performing procedures that she is not medically licensed to perform, both at the clinic and at clients’ residences,” claiming she stopped doing so when confronted by the clinic owner.
Collazo-Llosa, facing charges of second-degree theft, elderly exploitation and practicing medicine without a license, was being held in the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center on a $15,000 bond as of Thursday morning.
