MIAMI — A 38-year-old man was arrested after police say he threatened a woman and her 9-year-old son with an object outside a Miami hotel on Friday.

Miami police identified the suspect as Jorge Felix Larrea Diaz.

It happened around 4:20 p.m. at the Barlington Hotel, located at 1350 NW Second St, near Little Havana.

According to an arrest report, a woman told officers she was standing on the sidewalk outside the hotel with her son when Larrea Diaz approached while wearing a backpack.

The woman said Larrea Diaz took out a long brown knife and, in Spanish, told her, “Where is your husband? I’m going to cut your throat and your son’s throat,” the report stated.

Police said the boy then ran into the hotel lobby shouting that someone was trying to kill them. They said the boy’s father then came outside and saw Larrea Diaz holding the object.

The father picked up a small bicycle in self-defense, and police said Larrea Diaz fled back into the hotel.

Officers later detained him after the victims pointed him out.

Hotel staff reviewed surveillance video with officers, which showed Larrea Diaz holding an item in his right hand, police said. Larrea told police the item was a stick, not a knife, according to the report.

A motive for the threats has not been disclosed.

Larrea Diaz was booked into jail and faces one count of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, according to jail records.

He was not listed as inmate on the Miami-Dade jail website as of Monday afternoon.
