POMPANO BEACH, Fla. — A 30-year-old woman is facing multiple charges after authorities say she caused a high-speed crash in Pompano Beach last month that left one person dead days later.

According to the Broward Sheriff’s Office, the crash happened just after 2:30 p.m. on Oct. 18 near the 1200 block of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard.

Investigators said Dionndra Bell, then 29, was driving a 2021 Mitsubishi Outlander with her young daughter in the car when she lost control while traveling at more than double the posted 30 mph speed limit.

As the Mitsubishi came to a curve, deputies said it began to yaw and rotate clockwise before Bell overcorrected, causing the SUV to spin out of control.

They said Bell’s SUV then collided with the rear of a 2019 Chrysler 300 that was turning left onto Northwest Sixth Street, propelling the Chrysler into oncoming traffic where it struck a 2018 Mazda 3 head-on.

Detectives said skid marks covering more than 200 feet showed “reckless speed” was a contributing factor.

The Mitsubishi’s airbag deployed at an estimated 70 mph, about 40 miles over the speed limit. Investigators also noted the SUV had a spare tire mounted on the driver’s side rear wheel, which is not intended for speeds above 50 mph.

Bell and her passengers, including her daughter, were not injured and refused medical transport at the scene. Deputies said Bell did not have a valid Florida driver’s license and was found at fault for the crash.

Detectives said one of the victims was hospitalized and later died on Oct. 27 — nine days after the crash. The Broward County Medical Examiner’s Office ruled the cause of death as “delayed blunt force injuries” resulting from the collision.

Bell was arrested and booked into the Broward County Jail.

Jail records show she faces several charges, including one count of vehicular homicide of a person or viable fetus, three counts of reckless driving causing damage to a person or property, two counts of driving without a license causing death or serious injury, and one count of child neglect without great bodily harm.

During her court appearance Wednesday, a judge set her total bond at $92,000.

“If and when Ms. Bell bonds out, she’ll be on pretrial GPS level two,” the judge said. “I am ordering no driving. She cannot get behind the wheel of a vehicle during the pendency of this matter.”

The court also noted Bell has never held a passport and ordered that she not apply for one while the case remains active.

No other details about the victim killed in the crash were immediately released.
