MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. — A Miami-Dade mother was arrested Thursday after deputies said she stabbed her son with a fork during an argument over a phone bill.

Deputies with the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office said Leticia Puentes, 39, was taken into custody around 8:15 a.m. at a home near Northwest 72nd Street.

Upon arrival, they said Puentes’ son had a fresh puncture wound behind his right ear and told authorities that she stabbed him during a dispute about a phone bill and his tardiness at school.

Puentes admitted that during the argument, her son became upset and began throwing items around the home, according to an arrest report.

She said that while both were on the floor during a tussle, she stabbed him in what she claimed was self-defense, the report stated.

Miami-Dade Fire Rescue treated the victim at the scene.

Jail records show Puentes is facing one count of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon. She was being held on a $3,000 bond at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center as of Friday morning.
