FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — Newly-released video shows the moments immediately after authorities say a 21-year-old transgender TikTok influencer and hairstylist was murdered.
Deputies say her boyfriend, Shanoyd Whyte Jr., fired the shot that killed Girlalala, whose legal name is Maurice Harrison.
Video from a Tesla captured who appears to be Whyte, 25, getting out of the driver’s side of a sedan. The passenger door opens, which is when relatives said Girlalala tried to get out. Whyte is seen grabbing her by the hair and putting her back inside before pacing with a cell phone in hand.
Broward Sheriff’s Office investigators say the shooting happened shortly before 7 p.m. Friday along the 3300 block of Northwest 37th Avenue in Lauderdale Lakes.
The pair, who had been in a relationship for several years, had a verbal argument in the car that turned physical.
Authorities went on to say Girlalala was shot while sitting in the car.
Once deputies arrived to the scene, they found her wounded in the passenger seat. She was taken to Broward Health Medical Center where she died.
A neighbor who didn’t want to be identified described what his family heard and saw.
“My wife heard a gunshot around 6:50,” he said. “This whole area was blocked off, police were on scene, a lot of police were on scene. They kind of stormed into our house as well, I think the neighbor’s house too, check the perimeter and whatnot.”
Girlalala was known for her wigs and social media presence, with nearly 300,000 followers on TikTok and more than 40,000 on Instagram.
Behind the scenes, friends and relatives say Girlalala and Whyte had a tumultuous relationship.
Whyte, who once played football at Bethune-Cookman University, has been arrested previously for domestic violence in November 2022. It’s unclear if it’s the same victim, as the arrest form states he physically and maliciously battered the victim multiple times.
The family of the victim is too devastated to talk on camera, instead telling Local 10 in a statement:
“As a family we appreciate every prayer, kind thought, and gesture during our time of bereavement. Now, we are just praying that justice is served to the fullest degree.”
It’s a family that sadly has dealt with gun violence before. Last August, Girlalala’s brother was shot and killed.
Whyte faced a judge over the weekend, where he was denied bond.
