Driverless cars now on Miami streets, but you can’t ride in them ― yet

But public will be able to ride Waymo soon, company says

Driverless car service set to debut in Miami

MIAMI — There will soon be a high-tech new way to get around South Florida.

Waymo is the name. It’s a brand that uses fully autonomous Jaguars for all of its rides.

The unmistakable white vehicles are also fully electric and, as of Tuesday, they’re now roaming the streets of Miami.

Currently, they’re only available for Waymo employees to use, but the company says it plans to “(open) our service to the public next year.”

“I think it’s great,” said Javier Otero. “I live in L.A. and I use them quite often, and it’s probably more safe than being in a normal cab.”

It all starts with an app, similar to Uber and Lyft.

After ordering your ride, the empty car rolls up to your exact location, and after a brief safety introduction, you hit a button inside the car and you’re on your way.

Every turn, every lane change and subsequent stops are fully automated, with no one in the front seat.

The high-tech technology uses GPS, cameras and artificial intelligence to steer through the streets, something that Waymo has been testing on South Florida roads for months.

The driverless cars do not hit the highways though.

Waymo has already been a hit in Los Angeles, San Francisco and Phoenix and it’s now expanding to Florida, with Miami ahead of Orlando.

“I 100% trust in the technology,” said Otero. “And of course when there’s an accident, everyone will talk about it but I don’t think it’s an issue.”
