PALM BEACH, Fla. — Investigators have identified a 19-year-old man who was shot by deputies with the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office after they said he allegedly charged at them while armed with a machete.
Deputies were responding to a domestic disturbance call late Tuesday near the 7400 block of 43rd Terrace North in Riviera Beach.
While speaking to the female caller, they said Andre Mayard eventually emerged from a wooded area holding a machete roughly a foot and a half long.
Deputies ordered him several times to drop the weapon, but investigators say Mayard refused.
Instead, they said he lifted the machete above his head and advanced toward deputies “in an aggressive manner,” prompting one deputy to fire.
PBSO Chief Deputy Robert Allen said Mayard retrieved the machete from hedges as deputies backed away from him.
Allen confirmed that no deputies were injured. Mayard underwent surgery and remains in critical condition.
The deputy who fired has been placed on administrative leave, which is standard procedure. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is leading the investigation.
