MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. — Two Coral Springs teenagers have been identified in connection with a carjacking that authorities say occurred at a Target in southwest Miami-Dade on Wednesday afternoon.
The theft occurred when a woman parked her vehicle at the Target, located at 7795 SW 40th St. on Bird Road, and went inside the store around 1:45 p.m.
Deputies with the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office said 17-year-old Zacharias Allen approached the woman inside the store and told her that he “had a stain on his shirt” and asked her to take a photo of it.
As the woman was distracted, they said 16-year-old Ahmaree Thornton allegedly came up behind her and forcibly grabbed her vehicle keys from her front pocket, the report stated.
They said Thornton then ran out of the store and straight to the victim’s car, entering the vehicle and locking the doors.
According to the report, the victim stood behind her vehicle in an attempt to prevent it from being taken.
Thornton allegedly reversed the car, nearly striking her, then drove toward her before she moved out of the way. He then drove several feet and stopped long enough for Allen to get into the passenger seat, authorities said.
Air support from MDSO monitored the car as it traveled near the 16000 block of Northwest Seventh Avenue, near the Golden Glades Interchange in Miami Gardens, where deputies said both suspects bailed out and were taken into custody.
The two suspects were transported to the MDSO’s Northside District station, where investigators say each provided statements after being read their Miranda rights. They were then transported to the Juvenile Assessment Center.
Jail records show Thornton and Allen are each facing one count of robbery with carjacking. Thornton is also facing a separate charge of attempted aggrvated assault with a deadly weapon.
