TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — The Florida Public Service Commission wrapped up a meeting late Thursday morning where commissioners voted in favor of a rate increase for Florida Power and Light.
It will be FPL’s biggest rate hike in history, and it means Floridians’ power bills will be going up.
The impact will begin being felt in 2026 and effects more than 12 million customers statewide.
Bills are expected to rise about $2.50, a number that will increase every year.
By 2029, bills will have risen by $8 a month.
There has been major blowback as critics claim homeowners will pay more, but large corporations will pay less.
FPL claims the increase is to expand infrastructure and that things simply cost more.
Members of the Public Service Commission who approve rate hikes are political appointees.
