MIAMI — Miami police say a dirt bike rider slammed into a police car during an illegal street takeover that ended up on the Rickenbacker Causeway on Sunday, leading to his arrest on two felony charges.
Authorities said Jonny Maravilla, 28, of Homestead, was part of a group of more than 50 ATV and dirt bike riders engaged in reckless behavior while driving through downtown and Brickell just before 3:30 p.m.
Maravilla, police said, was seen by an officer “doing wheelies and partaking in the group blocking all lanes of traffic.”
An arrest report states that two officers tried to pull over the group while another officer, posted on the causeway, stopped his or her cruiser in the center lane of traffic ahead of the riders in an attempt to stop them.
Police said Maravilla crashed into the left front bumper of that officer’s cruiser and then wiped out in the road.
The arrest report states that the three officers took him into custody and rendered aid for his injuries.
As of Monday, Maravilla faced charges including coordinated drag racing and fleeing and eluding an officer.
Records show he was being held in the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center on a bond of more than $5,000.
