DORAL, Fla. — Law enforcement agencies from across Miami-Dade County showed up to collect their share of a large amount of donated, uncooked Thanksgiving turkeys.
Those birds will be distributed during their own community drives ahead of the Thanksgiving day holiday this week.
The effort is part of the Community Police Relations Foundation, which is aimed at bridging the gap between police and members of the public.
Officers with the Miami Police Department got a head start, hand-delivering some of the turkeys right to the doorsteps of people who had no idea they were coming.
“It’s marvelous,” said turkey recipient Regina Lee. “It’s a good thing, it’s a blessing.”
Over in Hallandale Beach, the fruits, vegetables and other holiday goodies were all out on display, fair pickings for people who showed up to the Mobile School Pantry on Tuesday.
“We don’t believe in giving out bags or boxes to families that are pre-packed; we really believe in giving them dignity,” said Zeina Zein-Wolland, founder and president of Mobile School Pantry. “Food with a lot of love, and ensuring they can make healthy choices, recognizing not every two families eats the same.”
Zein-Wolland said this is its 13th year of their Gobble Giveaway, and it comes in a year where the need appears to be unlike those in years past.
“These last few months have been so challenging for so many in our community, the need is higher than ever,” she said.
