FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — A 26-year-old man has been arrested in connection with a fatal crash that happened nearly six months ago on the Interstate 95 in Fort Lauderdale, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
Troopers said the crash occurred on May 26 as the Audi traveled north on I-95, just south of Cypress Creek Road, when the driver, identified as Sherkann Kilano Hector, of Coconut Creek lost control and struck a guardrail.
His passenger, a 27-year-old man from Pompano Beach, was taken to Broward Health North, where he was later pronounced dead.
Troopers initially said they found Hector in the driver’s seat of a 2011 Audi A4, with the victim lying across the center console.
Investigators said Hector showed signs of impairment, including a “strong odor of an unknown alcoholic beverage,” slurred speech and red, watery eyes. A blood draw later showed a 0.081 blood alcohol content, slightly above Florida’s legal limit of 0.08.
According to FHP, the medical examiner determined the victim died of positional asphyxia, and ruled the manner of death an accident.
Jail records show Hector is facing two counts of DUI causing death and two counts of DUI causing damage to property or person.
As of Tuesday afternoon, he was being held without bond at the Broward Main Jail.
